RIP Dolly

For all her success, Dolly’s greatest achievement was her philanthropy. In the early 1990s, her Dollywood Foundation promised seventh- and eighth-graders $500 if they graduated from high school, helping to reduce the dropout rate for those classes from 35 percent to six percent. Her Imagination Library has given more than 300 million books to children worldwide since its founding in 1995. In 2007, she gave a million dollars to Sevier County’s LeConte Hospital, including a new cancer center and the Dolly Parton Center for Women’s Services. When East Tennessee suffered devastating wildfires in 2016, her My People Fund distributed $12.5 million to families affected by the fires. In 2017, she donated one million dollars to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in honor of her niece, who was treated there for leukemia. When Covid hit, she gave one million dollars for coronavirus research at Vanderbilt University, which helped fund Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine. The list of good deeds, and lives she improved, goes on and on.
